You can make the easy dip out of onion soup mix and sour cream, or, you can make the real thing with richer flavors.

Ingredients
- 1 onion, sliced thinly
- 1/8 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon peanut oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups sour cream
- 3/4 cup Miracle whip
- or mayo + 1 ½ tbsp sugar & ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1/3 tsp sea salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
Instructions
- Combine the sliced onions in a bowl with the baking soda, salt and brown sugar and mix through. Allow to stand 10 minutes.
- Place a skillet over high heat and add the butter and peanut oil.
- When the oil is hot, add the onions and brown for about 20 minutes
- Add the garlic at the very end.
- Deglaze the pan if necessary, with some white wine, vinegar or water.
- Remove onions from the heat and allow them to cool.
- Mix the remaining ingredients together.
- Fine chop the cooled onions and add to the dip.
- Before serving, adjust seasonings to taste.
- Garnish with chives, parsley or cilantro and paprika over top.
