This classic and decadent dessert takes some time, but it is very much worth it. This recipe will be a hit with your guests. It is an authentic Italian dish; is it relatively new having been developed about 1970, but the location in Italy is disputed. The name literally means “cheer me up!” The recipe calls for mascarpone cheese but that has become ruinously expensive so I substituted cream cheese and the flavor was still delicious.
