Peel and quarter the potatoes.
Put the potatoes in a Dutch oven or large covered pot. Add the salt and just enough water to cover the potatoes.
Core the cabbage and slice into thin strips. Put in the pan on top of potatoes and water.
Bring this to a boil and then reduce to a simmer.
While the potatoes and cabbage cook, you can start on your sausage or pork steak.
If cooking pork steak you should season it in the Dutch manner, with salt, pepper, allspice, nutmeg and ground cloves.
When the potatoes and cabbage are soft drain them, add the butter, milk and pepper, and then mash it all together.
Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.
Serve with the meat and some vinegar to sprinkle over the top.
