Ingredients
  

  • 8 potatoes
  • 1 small head of cabbage
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • 2 lb of smoked sausage mettwurst is traditional or pork shoulder steak

Instructions
 

  • Peel and quarter the potatoes.
  • Put the potatoes in a Dutch oven or large covered pot. Add the salt and just enough water to cover the potatoes.
  • Core the cabbage and slice into thin strips. Put in the pan on top of potatoes and water.
  • Bring this to a boil and then reduce to a simmer.
  • While the potatoes and cabbage cook, you can start on your sausage or pork steak.
  • If cooking pork steak you should season it in the Dutch manner, with salt, pepper, allspice, nutmeg and ground cloves.
  • When the potatoes and cabbage are soft drain them, add the butter, milk and pepper, and then mash it all together.
  • Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.
  • Serve with the meat and some vinegar to sprinkle over the top.
